Steven Kellogg is a beloved author and illustrator who has contributed over 100 books for children, 30 of which he penned and illustrated himself. Kellogg fell into a love of writing and drawing at an early age and found any kind of animal story irresistible. Kellogg earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1963 where he majored in illustration and was particularly interested in the projects he did related to the creation of picture books. In 1967, Kellogg married his wife Helen. She brought with her an instant family of six children that Kellogg helped raise. Kellogg's first book was published in 1967, and he started illustrating books for other children's book authors in 1969. Kellogg still lives in the old farmhouse in Stoney Brook, Connecticut. Also in residence have been numerous dogs and cats. His Great Dane Pinkerton's puppyhood misbehavior inspired the book Pinkerton Behave! The heroine of the sequel, A Rose for Pinkerton, was a family cat named Secondhand Rose. Steven Kellogg speaks of his writing and illustrations, "An awareness of movement is extremely important in the conception of a picture book. The characters seem to speak, cavort, and leap from the page so energetically that their life and movement are totally convincing. I try to blend illustrations and the words so that each book is a feast for the eye and ear. I want the time that the reader shares with me and my work to be an enjoyable experience - one that will encourage a lifetime of association with pictures, words, and books." Kellogg will be demonstrating his talent of illustration as he visits with us in September. Tickets on sale June 22. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for adults.
